Private equity has been on a fundraising tear, with institutional investors pouring billions into the industry after receiving huge distributions. Large U.S. pension funds helped fuel the creation of massive buyout funds post-financial crisis as they suddenly had more money than they could spend on the asset class. It’s not just pension funds feeding the fundraising boom – there’s more money moving into the industry from sovereign wealth funds (Japan, Saudis) as well as affluent individuals.
