For all of Trump's insistence that the "fake news" is out to get him, there has been constant commentary--and a clear tug in reporters and in many Americans--to identify and find the possible upsides of Trump. He's amoral, sure, but he's shrewd, and maybe that shrewdness could benefit the country. He's mendacious, yes, but he's a dealmaker, and maybe America needs someone who's slippery and relentless. He has no regard for norms, but maybe abnormal is just the purgative that Washington and our sclerotic, dysfunctional politics needs.
